In this episode of the Cooperant Learning Podcast, Sarah Campau and Abigail Petronelli join to discuss their 2022 call to action article on LGBTQ+ conversion therapy and behavior analysis. The conversation explores the history of harmful practices in behavior analysis, the role of DEI, cultural competence and actionable steps practitioners can take to support LGBTQ+ individuals and promote ethical, inclusive care.

Abby and Sarah are both authors of “LGBTQ+ conversion therapy and applied behavior analysis: A call to action”  It’s the #3 most downloaded JABA article of 2022.

Sarah is completing her Phd in Public Policy from the University of Arkansas. As a BCBA, the intention was to learn more about the ways that clinical behavior is influenced by policy (gov’t and professional orgs). A BCBA since 2017, Sarah specializes in adult services and severe problem behaviors. In her current position, Sarah is using her BCBA to serve patients hospitalized for emergency psychiatric care. Her latest publication was a 2024 article in Cognitive and Behavioral Practices, “Policy Perspectives on Efforts to End Conversion”.

Abby is completing their PhD in Industrial Organizational Behavior Management at Western Michigan University. Abby’s primary areas of interest are in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, pinpointing specific behaviors for increase or decrease to improve the wellbeing and experiences of marginalized identities. Presently, Abby has one published article targeting proper pronoun use. However, Abby is also interested more broadly in instructional design, behavior in society, and organizational wellbeing.
