Drake and Brock University researchers are enacting this project to gain perspective on the status of board certified behavior analysts’ (BCBA) general understanding of psychotropic medication’s potential effects on behavior; how they have gained that understanding, and if that understanding influences their practice with regard to how psychotropic medication effects are considered during the delivery of behavioral services (e.g., reduce challenging behavior, enhance skill acquisition). Long-term functional stability of problem behavior exposed to psychotropic medications.
Psychotropic Medication Adjustment Patterns in Treatment Literature Featuring Persons with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities and Challenging Behavior
Learning Objectives
- Participants will describe the prevalence and patterns of psychotropic medication use among individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, including concerns related to off-label prescribing and lack of systematic monitoring
- Participants will analyze behavior-analytic conceptualizations of psychotropic medication effects (e.g., motivating operations, discriminative stimuli, conditioned reinforcement) and how these frameworks can guide data collection and clinical decision-making
- Participants will evaluate the role of objective, function-based assessment and data collection methods in monitoring medication effectiveness and side effects, and apply strategies to collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to support ethical and effective treatment planning
